Brief History of Jharkhand

Jharkhand, meaning “The Land of Forests”, became the 28th state of India on 15 November 2000 following the Bihar Reorganization Act. This date is also observed as the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a legendary tribal freedom fighter who played a pivotal role in the region’s resistance against British colonial rule. The land has long been inhabited by vibrant tribal communities such as the Santhal, Munda, Oraon, and Ho, each contributing to its rich cultural and social tapestry. Jharkhand is also recognized for its vast mineral resources, which have made it a hub of industrial development since the early 20th century. Notably, Jamshedpur, one of its key cities, became home to India's first iron and steel plant in 1907, established by Sir Dorabji Tata. With its deep-rooted tribal heritage, historical relevance, and natural beauty, Jharkhand remains a unique and culturally diverse state in eastern India.
